Five Tips for Choosing a New Chartplotter/Fishfinder

Price does count when upgrading your electronics, and these tips will help you figure out what features are worth the extra dollars.

You could spend $500 bucks on a combination chartplotter/fishfinder, or you could spend $5,000—and there’s a world of difference between “inexpensive,” and “cheap”. How can you make an intelligent choice as to which unit best fits your needs and your budget? Make sure you consider these five important factors, before you pull the trigger.

1. SIZE MATTERS when it comes to the screen, because this dictates from how far away you can see the unit, how large the numerics will be, and how “squeezed” the screen will become if you use a split-screen or zoom function. Look for units with screens that are at least 5” diagonal, or larger. Anything smaller then this is going to be tough to see unless you’re hunched right over it.
Another important screen feature is resolution, which will determine just how much detail the unit can provide. Resolution is measured by the pixel count, with more pixels being better. Cheap units provide only a few hundred pixels by a few hundred, but you can easily find inexpensive units with 480 by 480 or more. And also check out the screen’s visibility when wearing polarized sunglasses. Many will fade when viewed from an angle in bright sunlight. To test this out in the store, bring a bright spotlight and your sunglasses with you when you shop. Hit the unit with the light, put on your glasses, and see if you can still see the screen as you lean off to one side.
2. POWER is another factor you’ll need to consider. But power is only one half of the equation that determines how deep and accurately your unit will be able to detect fish; transducer choice also plays a huge role. More on this in a moment, but first, note that units in the low end of the price range usually put out between 100 and 300 watts. (Remember to check the spec in RMS, not “peak”). If you’re fishing in water of 200’ or less that’s plenty, but if you need to reach bottom in deeper waters, additional wattage will help you punch through.
3. TRANSDUCERS need to be considered in concert with power. The larger the transducer crystal is, the more focused its beam will be. The more focused the beam, the deeper it will penetrate. Think of it like a flashlight beam: one that’s set to spotlight penetrates farther then one that’s set to floodlight. In real-world use, doubling the transducer crystal’s diameter has the same effect as quadrupling the output power. So a machine pushing 300-watts through a four-inch transducer will see just as deep as a fishfinder pushing 1,200-watts through a one-inch transducer. Unfortunately, depending on where you buy the unit you may not have a choice as to what transducer comes with it. In most cases, however, you can easily purchase an upgraded transducer. Airmar’s web site (www.airmar.com) has a lot of good info on what transducer upgrades are available and how to choose between them.
4. CONNECTORS may not seem like an important part of the machine, but they are. Connectors with flimsy plastic collars or thin metal prongs can get broken or bent, and replacing them can cost a large fraction of the unit’s price. So wiggle, push, and prod at them in the store to see just how tough they are, before you buy a unit. Pay special attention to these parts if you have to pull the unit off the boat each time you go home, because the more often you remove and replace the plugs, the more likely it is a problem will arise.
5. LONGEVITY is, of course, another important consideration. Water resistance, especially if you’ll be mounting the unit on a small, open boat, is the most important consideration in this regard. Pay close attention to the IPX (International Protection code) or JIS (Japanese Industry Standard) ratings, which are essentially identical. A rating of four is considered “splashproof,” which could accurately be interpreted as “will fry when wet.” A rating this low is simply insufficient for a small, open boat. An IPX/JIS of five means the unit can withstand low-pressure jets of water, six is high pressure jets of water, seven is submersible for up to 30 minutes at three meters, and eight can be operated while submerged continually. Obviously, the higher the rating number is, the longer your unit will survive in the marine environment—and that makes all the difference in the world, between “inexpensive” and “cheap”.

After seven months at sea, an Australian teen on Thursday was just two days away from reaching the finish line in her bid to become the youngest person to sail solo, nonstop and unassisted around the world.

Thousands are expected to line Sydney Harbour on Saturday to offer a hero's welcome to 16-year-old Jessica Watson, who has battled 40-foot (12-meter) waves, multiple knockdowns and critics who called her too immature and inexperienced for the treacherous journey.
Many thought she couldn't, and her parents faced withering criticism from those who believed allowing a teenager to attempt such a feat was foolish, insane — even borderline criminal. But the couple repeatedly defended their decision, even after their daughter, who has been sailing since she was 8, collided with a merchant ship during a test run.
Watson, from Buderim, north of Brisbane in Queensland state, sailed out of Sydney on Oct. 18. She traveled northeast through the South Pacific and across the equator, then south to Cape Horn at the tip of South America, across the Atlantic Ocean to South Africa, through the Indian Ocean and around southern Australia. She has survived on prepackaged meals, the occasional freshly caught fish and a steady supply of chocolate.
Another Australian, Jesse Martin, who was 18 when he completed the journey in 1999, holds the current record for the youngest person to sail around the world solo, nonstop and unassisted. But Watson's feat will not be considered an official world record, because the World Speed Sailing Record Council discontinued its "youngest" category.

Sixteen-year-old American Abby Sunderland of Marina del Ray, California, launched her own solo round-the-world bid in January. In May, she had to pull into port in South Africa for boat repairs, ending her nonstop attempt. She still plans to try to complete her voyage.

When you have a Beneteau, new or old, maybe the lines are blurred.

In the recent Banderas Bay Regatta (Click here to check out the race website) that took place in Puerto Vallarta March 16 – 20 some 58 boats were competing in the 2 multihull and 5 monohull classes.

These are primarily cruising boats that have made their way down the California and Baja Coasts to enjoy a winter of fabulous sailing in Mexico. By no means are they stripped out racers, but boats that sport solar panels, dinghy davits and all kind of cruising gear.

This year was a great year for anyone bringing a Beneteau to the regatta.

Here are the top boats in the mono hull classes:

DIVISION A: The hard core racing division was won by Cirque, a 13 year old Bruce Farr designed Beneteau First 42s7 skippered by Louis Krug, who has been cruising Mexico for the last several seasons.

DIVISION D: The ‘light’ racing division was won by Wind Child, a Beneteau First 36.7 that did the Bajaha last fall. Another Bruce Farr Design skippered by Rudy Heessels - still a current production boat - narrowly beat out a 20 year old Beneteau First 405!

DIVISION E: The medium displacement division did not have any Beneteau’s in the line up, so honors went to a boat build by the Groupe Benetaus sister company, a Jeanneau 43DS.

DIVISION F: The heavy division saw a boat that must be close to 25 years old, Bolero a Beneteau Idylle 43, walk away a 1^ST place. Bolero had nothing but bullets in the entire regatta! Great job by Thom and Cheryl Landgreen.

DIVISION G: Won by Music, a 2009 Beneteau 40 that we just commissioned last summer. Music also did the Bajaha ’09 and have been cruising Mexico since. Co-skippers Jan Grant and Rick Gio had a great time sliding down the Baha Peninsula and stayed out when a majority of the Bajaha fleet sought shelter the first night out of San Diego.

We are currently doing the final preparations to our Beneteau First 42s7, TIVOLI, to leave for Mexico in the fall of 2010 on an extended cruise: watermaker, solar panels, wind generator, canvas, SSB, big anchors with lots of chain……….next year we will be competing at Banderas Bay.

Sailing World Magazine announced the best in boatbuilding for 2010 with its 26th annual Boat of the Year Awards. The results will be featured in Sailing World's January 2010 issue.
An independent panel of experts inspected and tested the 14 nominated boats during the U.S. Sailboat Show in Annapolis earlier this year. Decisions were based on extensive inspections and sea trials of the boats. Taking home the honor for the Best Crossover was the Beneteau First 40.

BENETEAU USA INC. TRANSFORMS FACTORY INTO "JUST IN TIME LEAN MANUFACTURING"

Marion, SC, October 19, 2009: With a huge investment in a new CNC machinery driven woodshop and a complete overhaul of its production areas, Beneteau USA Inc. is in the process of revamping its 250,000 square foot facility into the most modern big sailboat factory in America. Contractors, advisors from parent company Groupe Beneteau, and South Carolinian team members are scurrying to change the 25 year old factory from the past style of eight independent production lines into a new, single line, continuous flow production facility comprising 20 operation positions. The outcome of this new way of building will allow shortened lead times, less work in process and greater flexibility in model mix. The Marion plant will be the only American sailboat plant able to build anything from 30 footers up to 50 footers, all in the same quick-flow process.

“This is an amazing feat for our team, as it truly was an internal initiative that came from the leadership of our Vice President of Manufacturing, Gerard Martineau, working with the full spectrum of production from managers to those on the floor. They have developed a system that is unique in our end of the industry and will eliminate wasted time while improving quality and flexibility,” said Wayne Burdick, President of Beneteau USA. “When the plant reconfiguration work is complete and we are able to turn on the new, lean, mean, production machine, no one else in the US will be able to make cruising sailboats with as much efficiency and flexibility of product mix. This should give Beneteau a strategic advantage to quickly provide the best value in exactly the model our customer wishes to buy.”

Passage Yachts chartered a boat to bring the local fleet up to 6 boats for a One Design Start. We also made sure all the crew was easy to recognize in their bright, red shirts from Passage!
The racing in the Beneteau fleet was tight, but ultimately Pat Patterson's 'Summer and Smoke' emerged a winner.

News from the 2009 Rolex Big Boat Series and Rolex US-IRC National Championship event:

September 2, 2009

With one week until the start of the 2009 Rolex Big Boat Series, St. Francis Yacht Club (StFYC) Race Office is busy coordinating the many logistical details that accompany running one of the world’s most-loved regattas. Racing this year is scheduled for September 10-13, and includes racing in seven one-design classes – 1D35, Beneteau 36.7, Express 37, J/105, J/120, Melges 32 and, for the first time, the Cal 40 class, as well as divisions for IRC-rated entries. At the conclusion of the four-day regatta, specially engraved Rolex timepieces will be awarded to the St. Francis Yacht Club’s six Perpetual Trophy winners and to the overall IRC winner as the Rolex US-IRC National Champion. Although the Rolex Big Boat Series will be celebrating its 45th anniversary this year, another occurrence will take center stage, the StFYC’s tribute to the late Tom Blackaller. Full article here.

Hi Klaus,

Hope you recieved my last email in reply to yours of July 28th.

Lots of hard work on Mirage III in the last so many days with Hedley having all sorts of problems with the wind and trying to get to Tahiti. He has sent me the following message to pass to you.

" After leaving Hilo was able to make some Easting but S of 4 Deg N became very uncomfortable trying to just maintain Long against 20/25 KT wind and 2KT current. Vicinity Malden Is gave up and headed for Apia. Arrive about 7 August.

Needless to say I will join him there, not as delightful as Tahiti I'm sure....maybe next time!!

Hello Klaus,

Somewhere along the line I have obviously offended the wind gods. The wind was out of sorts between San Francisco and Hilo but once I left Hilo the wind became positively venomous. I had hoped to make a lot of easting out of Hilo to enable me to have a good run past the Marquesas to
Tahiti.

However, it was not to be - the wind was mainly from the E and once through the doldrums it was mainly from the SE. The effect was I made very little easting ex Hilo and once south of the equator, made none at all. It became obvious fairly early I was not going to make Tahiti however, I persevered for some days hoping for a change. Eventually, the pounding beat me and I gave up and headed for Apia in Western Samoa, where there is proper marina and which is where I am now with Donna.

The leg from Hilo took 25 days mainly because, for nearly a week, I was virtually becalmed in the SE "variables". The trip was uneventful, except for the breakages in the headsail furling line, caused by the furling line chafing against the sharp edges of the Harken drum. It is a poor piece of design, and I hope they have modified the feed - it is a simple job. As it was, when the line broke, it was during difficult conditions, and it was no help having the headsail extend itself fully.

The other incident concerned some whales a few days out of Apia I was horrified/delighted/horrified to see this whale following me about 100 feet behind the boat alternatively diving and surfacing . I thought he may be about to attack the boat but he left me alone and he and his mate eventually went off in another direction.

I expect to be in Apia for about 10 days or so, and then will press on to Noumea and Brisbane. I should be home by end September. I will be in touch again when I have some more news.

MARION, SC: The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) has announced that Beneteau USA is a recipient of the 2009 Marine Industry CSI Awards. This award marks the third consecutive year that Beneteau USA has secured this honor. NMMA launched its CSI program in 2001 to provide boat and engine manufacturers with an independently-measured, cost-effective means of improving customer satisfaction in the boating industry.

Award recipients will be acknowledged during the 2009 International BoatBuilders’ Exhibition and Conference (IBEX), taking place October 12-14 at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

The Marine Industry CSI Awards program honors participating manufacturers that actively measure customer satisfaction and pursue continuous improvement to better serve the customer. Award recipients achieved and maintained an independently-measured standard of excellence of 90 percent or higher in customer satisfaction over the past year, based on information provided by customers purchasing a new boat or engine during the period between April 1, 2008 and March 31, 2009. Participating manufacturers are required to survey all new boat buyers during this period.

Beneteau First 36.7 Cruise-out this weekend!

Just a quick reminder about the event coming up this weekend:

36.7 First Cruise--out to Richmond Yacht Club.

Crew/skippers/family and friends should show up in the turning basin at RYC no later than 3:00 for the 1st Annual R.U.M. Regatta that starts around 4. Dinner will be at the club right after the regatta with a slide presentation of the fleet and a short clip from last years Rolex Big Boat Series. Spankers to follow on Ay Caliente....if you've had one you know what I'm talking about!

Once again this is a great opportunity for interested parties to come out and meet the fleet, sail a fun regatta and have a great BBQ at RYC!!! Bring your family and friends...there should be plenty of room on the boats for a ride.

All guests are welcome to the BBQ post race. We'll have hamburgers or chicken breasts for $10 a person....the bar will be open for those of you who have a drinking problem (or in my case a rum problem).

Skippers: Please have you or someone from your program bring a side dish for the dinner...ie. your favorite dessert or salad etc. If everyone brings a little something that would be helpful...I estimate about 45-50 people showing up...FUN!

Passage Yachts broker, Klaus Kutz, of the Alameda Office has sent in an update from his wayward client, Hedley Thomas. As you may recall, Hedley set out from San Francisco back on June 9th, on his way to Australia via Hawaii. His boat is a 1985 Beneteau Idylle 11.7 (a 35 footer) that he bought used from Klaus...

Part one is now complete as he made it to Hilo on the Big Island.

Here is Klaus' note and Hedley's email:

Jim, this is my latest communications with Hedley. He arrived in Hilo, Hawaii on Saturday, July 4 in the afternoon, after twentyfour and half days at sea. He arrived in good shape and spirits. No major problems ( the only items to repair was a restitching of the UV protection on his jib). He had enough fuel to run his engine every day for at least three hours to recharge his battery banks. He used the electronic auto pilot almost all the time and had his refrigeration on all the time assuring cold beers for the whole trip. He is planning on leaving either today or tomorrow for Riaitea, French Polynesia. That is a distance of approximately 2400 nautical miles from Hilo, Hawaii. Hedley is hoping to make better time and arrive in less days than he used to get to Hilo from the mainland.

Hi Klaus,

Have been in Hilo for just over a week now and plan on leaving tomorrow
or Wednesday - weather permitting.

The leg from Alameda was pretty uneventful except for about 2 nights
when the wind blew quite strongly. There were about 3 -4 days when the
wind was contrary and did not blow at all or, blew from the wrong
direction. I am hoping for better luck on the leg to Tahiti.

I drove around the island yesterday and and would not recommend Kona as
a place to go. It is a small artificial harbour packed with sport
fishing boats and nowhere to moor for visitors. I understand that if
you want to be lifted out with the Travelift, you need to book a time
and be there at that time. About 40 miles north there is another
harbour which offers much better shelter but has no facilities at all.
Nevertheless, if I have to come back to a harbour on the west side it is
to Kaui I will go.

A & B Fleet Services in Hawaii have been most helpful with some minor
items that needed attention and are presently helping out another
yachtsman who was towed into Hilo in a Valiant 40 suffering fuel and
transmission problems. He was going to go to Kona but I have suggested
he go to Honolulu instead.

I figure I will go to Riaitea in French Polynesia rather than Papeete.
I have been speaking to a guy who is pretty experienced in these waters
and he said theft was a big problem in Papeete whether you were on the
boat or not. Apart from that there is a proper marina at Riatea and I
know Donna will like that rather than mooring stern to.

Will away now Klaus. May I suggest you keep in touch with Donna as she
will know where I am. If at all possible I will email from Fr Polynesia.

I sold a 1985 Beneteau Idylle 11.5 to an Australian gentleman "Hedley Thomas" late in March, 2009. Hedley was looking for an affordable, but stoud and well maintained boat in the mid thirty foot size range, that could be sailed by him singlehanded across the Pacific home to his native Brisbane in Australia.
After scouring the local brokerage market, he decided that our 1985 37' Beneteau Idylle 11.5 offered the best his money could buy. The deal was consummated after a test sail and a thorough engine and hull survey. Hedley, then proceeded to replace the old batteries with a new upgraded battery system and a thorough upgrade of some of the wiring. Installation of a new refrigeration system, linear auto pilot, knot meter, wind point and wind speed instrumentation followed. He also thoroughly surveyed and upgraded his running and standing rigging. All of this took time and cut into his expectation to leave by the end of May. The day of his departure finally came early on June 9, 2009. Hedley received a send off in Alameda at the Encinal Yacht Club at 7:30 am Tuesday, June 9. Klaus Kutz his broker from Passage Yachts in Alameda and Klaus' wife Jennifer followed Hedley out to the Golden Gate Bridge on their boat "Pacific Flyer" and waved Hedley and his proud Mirage III fair well as he passed under the Gate at exactly 9:15 am in a light breeze, starting ebb and grey skies.
Klaus received a text message from Hedley after he had completed his first seven day's at sea, which reported slow progress because of light and contrary winds. A most recent message marked Hedley's second full week at sea with encouraging news of strong and steady winds from the right direction and the skipper reporting great progress with only 800 NM more to go to reach his interim destination of Ala Wai Harbor on Ohuau, Hawaii.
We will keep you posted about Mirage III's progress as we get reports from its intrepid skipper, Hedley Thomas.

Surfrider Foundation is an awesome not for profit to support, especially if like most of you – people I know – love the ocean. I volunteer for the Marin chapter, and we have our annual summer party this Friday evening, June 5, to celebrate World Ocean Day on June 8. I know it isn't nice to talk about "problems" with new boats. Let's be clear, boats are made by people and therefore are never 100% perfect. What really matters is how the company selling the boats stands behind them. Here is an example of why I like selling quality boats backed by reputable builders!

This photo is of a couple of really great Beneteau Techs who were just flown in from the wood factory in France to fix a small issue with the finish on this bulkhead for a customer of ours. By the way - it is important to note that this is a 2005 boat being repaired for a 2nd owner - pretty unheard of!!

At Passage Yachts, we are lucky to have support and help from the builders we represent. Beneteau and Island Packet are two of these that really shine. Outside proof of this is that these two manufacturers were the only two US sailboat builders who won the NMMA 2008 CSI Award. Here is the press release....

Here's the info you need to find your way to the party.

LOCATION: Cruise-in to Encinal Yacht Club (click here for directions). We have reserved the guest dock and will be rafting up for the event.

TIME: The dock is reserved for the weekend. Come after work on Friday if you'd like. We will have the host vessel, the Island Packet 465, at the dock. (Official check-in time is not until 3:00 Saturday)

Alerion Sailing...Yes!

I have been enjoying Thursday night sails on our Alerion 28 the past few months with my friend Joan and various visitors, including my kids, friends and other adventurers. Cold? Some nights, but the sunsets and moon shots far outweigh the bit of frost on our pumpkins.

This is such a fun boat to sail!! Last night, in about 12 to 15 knots of wind, we made it up the estuary in about 45 minutes. We sailed out to the bridge then turned back for a swift reach down the estuary back to Marina Village.

Our photographers never have to say, "smile", when taking a picture under sail!

Obama to back yachting initiatives

US President Barack Obama wants the carbon zero benefits of sailing taken into consideration when business grants are being doled out in a bid to strengthen the failing marine industry.

Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi said: "This will be not only good for the environment but for all my friends in the Bay Area who love sailing."

"We also welcome the commercial partnerships between companies as well," she added. Pelosi cited the newly announced joint marketing effort between mast maker Southern Spars and the pharmaceutical company Pfizer, makers of Viagra. The two companies have launched a new advertising campaign targeted to the male sailing audience with their slogan; "A stiff rig is hard to beat". The first commercials are due to air during the next leg of the Volvo Ocean Race.

Republican Ron Paul of Texas said: "When you look at modern sailing yachts today, most of these vessels are fitted with carbon masts. How can this administration look us straight in the eye and say this package is focused on zero carbon when the masts are carbon? I don't care if you put the carbon in the atmosphere or up in the sky in the form of a mast, it's all the same carbon in my book."

In Florida again after flying in today from Staniel Cay, Exumas. Five people in a tiny plane.....with a chef on a 90 meter Luhrsen megayacht with a crew of 25!! Have seen a B-311, 393, 43 and 46 all cruising. Most from Canada. In Nassau there were 25 motor yachts all 150+. What recession!! Jimmy Buffet was having a beer at the bar last night in Staniel Cay. Home this weekend.....

Beneteau, the Greener boat builder

Kermit the Frog once said - “Itʼs not easy being green”. Maybe Kermit was a boatbuilder at some point in his life. Had he been, he would have known how true that statement was - and is. Components such as petroleum based products, lead, and wood from rain forests have routinely been used to build modern sailboats for a longtime, and most manufacturers still do use these things, partially from necessity and partially from choice.

The reality is that ﬁberglass boats must be made using materials that arenʼt always the friendliest for the environment. But the other reality in sailing is that the end product is quite environmentally friendly. Sailboats use very little fuel, and are mostly self contained under way, so pollution and sailing are rarely used in the same sentence. Thatʼs obvious, but letʼs go back to the manufacturing process and look at the things that make Beneteau a better and greener manufacturer.

Starting with the layup of the hull and deck, Beneteau is ahead of its competitors in using more environmentally friendly techniques such as injection molded decks on most models. Injection molding does away with the spraying of polyester resin into an openmold, which creates a large amount of styrene infused airborne residue that is not a particularly good thing, as you can well imagine. Injection molding incorporates a 2 piece mold into which precise pre-cut pieces of dry ﬁberglass are applied. The two pieces of the mold are joined together and resin is injected evenly into the mold and forced throughout the piece to ensure even penetration and saturation of resin into the glass. This process has a dual beneﬁt - it guarantees much more consistent pieces in terms of weight and ﬁnish, and it eliminates all airborne spraying of resin, making a cleaner and safer workplace as well as a better product. This is a process pioneered by Beneteau and is used by very few others in the business because of the added expense to create the tooling and to implement the process in older manufacturing facilities.

The beautifully ﬁnished interior wood used by Beneteau, called ALPI, is created from veneers made from natural hardwoods grown in managed sustainable forests. It is a processed multi-laminar wood which is consistent in grain pattern and color, making it easy to repair or replace if necessary. The process involves using thinly cut veneers which are selected based on color and grain quality. The veneers are then put into piles and immersed into tanks containing pigment to obtain a light and homogenous tint.They are then immersed into a second tank of pigment to obtain the ﬁnal color and to stabilize the color against UV rays and to seal them. Once this is done, they are sorted again to a chosen grain pattern, stacked,and glued using a proprietary waterproof glue into solid blocks of wood. This is the base for the ALPI product.

The blocks are then “sliced” very thinly on an angle, and the angle of the cut determines the grain width and character. The ﬁnished plies of wood are fully ﬁnished end grain pieces that are uniform in appearance and resistant to impact, thanks to the glue and compression incorporated into the manufacturing process. Beneteau then takes an extra step in the process and cuts the existing plies at another angle to add even more impact resistance and consistency in ﬁnish.

The ﬁnished are then sent to the plywood manufacturer to be glued onto Class “A”sheets of marine grade laminates. These ﬁnished products become the beautiful bulkheads and cabinetry that are the signature of Beneteau boats. While this is a much more expensive process than conventional methods used by most builders, the end result is a higher quality and harder ﬁnish than one would expect.

Beneteau has also been a leader in using cast iron for its keels rather than lead, which is much more toxic to the environment and not as durable in cruising boats. Cast iron keels will stand up to running aground without bending or losing their shape, which is a problem with lead, not to mention that the expense and restrictive rules of lead use are making cast iron the smart AND green choice for modern cruising boat keels.

These are but a few of the ways that the worldʼs largest manufacturer of recreational sailboats, Beneteau, is contributing to a healthier environment, both in their manufacturing plants and on the water. Good and green sailing to you!

A New Award for BENETEAU

It was during the official European Yacht of the Year gala evening in Düsseldorf, on Saturday 17 January 2009, that the news was announced.
The Océanis 31 was elected European Yacht of the Year in the Family Cruiser class, by a jury of journalists from 10 specialized European magazines. This year, the various yachts nominated did not compete in size classes as in previous years, but according to their sailing programme. The following yachts were in the Family Cruiser class: Bavaria 43, Sun Odyssey 30, Southerly 32, Delphia 26 and Océanis 31.

Following the election of the Océanis 37 as Yacht of the Year 2008 by Voile Magazine, this new award confirms BENETEAU’s capacity to develop yachts that continue to be innovative, comfortable and high-performing. It is also the second yacht to be designed by the FINOT-CONQ Group and associates of the Italian Nauta Design office to receive such an award.

Spring series at La Trinite for First the 40

First regatta for yachts Cornouaille Magic, Coup de Coeur and Courrier Zen during the 3rd week end of the spring series at La Trinite ( Brittany - France ).

Cornouaille Magic won the IRC trophy during the 6th race. The event took place with light winds ( 8 - 10 knots ).

Courrier Zen, led by Gery Trentesaux has performed very well too.
Even if she finished before Cornouaille Magic, the temporary rating handicaped her ( TTC 2000 vs 1.0890 for Cornouaille Magic, as she has already declared her certificate IRC), Courrier Zen has "given" the first place to the crew lead by Herve Ricoux.

The skippers of these 3 First 40 are very pleased with the yachts : very efficient deck organisation , well organized cockpits, and good speed.

Ay Caliente Testimonial!

After seeing the Beneteau 36.7 at the 2005 Strictly Sail boat show I was totally hooked. It did not take long to realize this boat had everything I was looking for. A racer/cruiser with a functional helm and comfortable appointments down below. In 2006 I purchased Ay Caliente Hull #127. The first day I took delivery of her we sailed out the Golden Gate to Point Bonita and I was very impressed by her speed and smooth handling under sail. I have not been disappointed since. Whether racing on the bay or just cruising with friends this boat always delivers and continues to amaze me.

We put her into the San Francisco 36.7 OD Fleet last year and have enjoyed the camaraderie that comes with racing in a close knit sailing family. The other skippers were very welcoming and helpful regarding the boat and set up. After a long day of racing it's fun to take a hot shower down below or grab a cold drink out of the fridge. When we're not racing we cruise out and drop the hook at one of the many beautiful anchorages around the Bay. It's been said many times on the docks that Ay Caliente may be one of the most active boats at the club...if you owned one you’d know exactly what I mean as you too would be impressed with her versatility, reliability and comfort! As the current Fleet Captain I'd be happy to offer any additional information regarding the boat and it’s fascinating features or about our ever-growing local racing fleet.

Rich Wilson finishes 9th in Vendee Globe!

Only the second American to ever finish the Vendee Globe solo around the world race, Rich Wilson just recently finished in a very respectable 9th place! Considering over 60% of the starting fleet didn't finish, this is quite an accomplishment. Rich has another bragging point, the fact that he is the oldest competitor at 58yrs old! Way to go Rich!

Did you know that Les Sables D'olonne - the starting and ending point for the Vendee Globe - is where Beneteau's corporate headquarters are? The French do have an incredible sailing history...

In theory, the Vendée Globe is an utterly simple affair. Its fundamental principles come down to a few sentences, compared to which even the roughest logbook would seem sophisticated. A sailing race around the world, for singlehanders, without any stopover. That’s it. In theory at least, because beyond these words start great stories.

Official supplier of legends since 1989, this race has impressed the maritime world and the public in general, to the point where even the strongest superlatives seem unable to define it. The sea also has its mythical summit, created 15 years ago by a sailor, two times winner around the world (BOC Challenge, with stopovers), who refused to rest on his laurels.

Philippe Jeantot wished to go further, to give a new dimension to the world of maritime adventure… “Time, he wrote, is a necessary factor to attain perfect harmony with one’s sailboat. We had to forget about stopping. A round-the-world race, without stopovers or assistance, such were the conditions to reach the desired communion. For the first edition, we set off towards the unknown. None of the 13 sailors who crossed the starting line in 1989 had the experience of a solo journey exceeding 100 days” *.

Courtesy of McMichael’s Yacht Brokers, I have attached some photos of 38#15, the first and only AE38 to have teak decks. AE38#17, currently under construction has a custom all-teak interior with curved ultra suede settees and a custom off-white deck color.

Although sales have been slower than usual, happily there have been 4 new AE28’s ,an AE33 and an AE20 sold since the beginning of the year. This shows a lot confidence in the Alerion Express brand! It also proves that it isn’t all doom and gloom out there like the media wants us to believe. We appreciate all of your support of the Alerion Express Brand.

Island Packet Estero

Good afternoon. I thought everyone would like to see a couple of pictures of the new Estero as she floated last week in Palmetto, FL for seatrials. Although we had primarily light and variable breezes during the three days she was rigged, she sailed at about half wind speed to a little better, and handled beautifully. She was “hands off” when sailing at 4.3 knots in light seas, exhibited virtually no rudder vibration even during high speed acceleration trials, and motored at 7.5 knots WOT and in the sixes at cruising RPM.

The yacht looks good from every angle and we look forward to getting more photographs with the Estero “pressed hard under sail with a bone in her teeth!” Bill Bolin - Island Packet Yachts

VIP Sailing demo day

Success.... another fun demo day at Passage Yachts! We had 6 people on the Beneteau 40, 5 on the Benetau 49, and 5 on the Island Packet SP Cruiser. For the first day of daylight savings, we were treated to sunshine & blue skies and 10-18kts of breeze. I took out the 40 which received many compliments on its stability, easy of sailing (the electric winch getting big kudos), and its beautifully done interior. We tacked across and through Racoon straights, around Alcatraz, back past Angel Island and home - a great 3 hour tour!

So tell me why this is a good time to buy a new boat,
by Don Finkle:

Actually it may or may not be a good time, depending on your own situation. Those who are in danger of losing their job, or maybe being transferred to a landlocked area, contemplating a divorce or in financial trouble already should not be coming to see us about buying right now. However, for some of us, this is the best time we have yet seen, and we'll explain why we say that.
I am addressing those who know that a new boat is in their future at some point. You are the ones for which it is not an "if", but a "when". We have some very good arguments to be made as to why NOW is the time.

A change unlike anything I have seen before is taking place in our industry. There is a squeeze from both sides that has severely stressed builders and dealers alike. On the one hand we have a customer base which has been scared to death by the media and the loss in value in their retirement accounts. On the other we have a banking system that has all but disappeared when it comes to providing wholesale lending for dealers who finance their inventory (which is almost all dealers…who has several spare million sitting around to tie up in boat inventory?).

This has created a scenario where dealers MUST sell their stock boats because the lenders are putting a big-time squeeze on us to move any boats we have in our inventory. The longer a boat sits on the lot, the more nervous the bank becomes as they see their collateral depreciating. Then they start to hit us with principle curtailment payments every month. In addition to paying our normal interest on the inventory, now we have to start paying principle. Imagine how much fun that is when sales are slow! Of course we still have all of our other expenses, such as insurance which is tied to how much inventory we have.

So dealers are highly motivated to move their boats. Some have lost their financing source as companies such as Keybank and Textron have completely exited the business of loaning to dealers, forcing them to go out on the street and look for new financing at a time when banks are not lending. The trouble is no new bank wants to take your old inventory. Therefore we are even more motivated to clear the decks so we can make a move. While most of the dealers I know are in this situation to some degree, so is RCR. What has allowed us more breathing room than most is that we are a marina, boatyard and service company that does not rely totally on boat sales for its existence. Nevertheless we must restructure our sales business so it is sustainable in the new reality, and that means substantially lower stocking levels. So what is in stock now MUST GO!

OK, so dealers have got to dump their inventory, but that is only half the story. The builders are in the same, if not worse, situation. They can't build a boat unless they have a dealer to take it. The dealer can't take it so long as he has a boat already. And, even if the dealer wanted to take it, he can't because the bank won't loan him the money for a stock boat. So that means the builders are basically at a standstill until a dealer finds a retail buyer for a boat. Right now their pipeline is full because we dealers all have too much inventory for their current market to absorb.

As a result, the builders are digging deep to help dealers out by offering us incentives that allow us to even further reduce the price of our boats. It is not about making money right now, it is often not even about breaking even. We are selling some boats at an outright loss but the alternatives are even worse.

What this means to you, the buyer, is that as long as we have stock boats to dump you are going to buy at ridiculous prices. Your potential depreciation has been absorbed by others. You will be paying a much lower price, financing less, and of course paying less in tax. The boats we have in stock were purchased at old prices that are lower than current. You are saving every which way.

So why shouldn't I wait until maybe prices come down more? Well for one thing,
there is only so low we can go on the price because we have to generate enough cash to pay off the bank what we owe on the boat. Once the dealer and builder have kicked in all they can, that is the floor. We are at that point now.

We aren't going to order a new boat for you and sell it at a loss. The present scenario lasts only as long as there is inventory to dump. Once that is over we'll be operating in a different world. The builders and dealers are in business to make a living, and in the long run they need to sell at a profit that sustains them. Raw materials costs will go up as the economy recovers, as will interest rates. The builders are putting out far fewer boats than their most efficient production rates, so the overhead absorption for each unit out the door is higher. In the future most boats will be built to order, and that will cost more, and we will no longer be obligated to make unprofitable deals just to move a stock boat.

I am not embarrassed or afraid to tell you this, they are the facts and we have no reason to hide anything. Those who do not need to cash in their 401(k) plan right now and who have the courage to make the move will be savings thousands, often tens of thousands. As they say, "timing is everything", and right now the time is right. Figure that these opportunities do not come along every day, and the fact that the industry is riding out a Perfect Storm means you stand to gain like never before, and probably never again. And best of all, you can start to enjoy that new boat this spring, while you have the health and energy to use it.
And, when you do want or need to sell the boat down the road, you have protected yourself by buying at the lowest possible price
